Market research observation

The mycelium-based products leverage mycelium's distinctive properties, such as breathability, biodegradability, water resistance, and lightweight nature, to develop innovative, eco-friendly solutions.

Finding on mycelium’s acoustic feature

Mycelium has acoustic properties because of its unique structure; the network of hyphae creates a porous material that can trap and dissipate sound waves, effectively reducing noise by absorbing sound rather than reflecting it.

Their absorption behavior is influenced by factors such as fiber size, porosity, material thickness, and density, all of which contribute to mycelium's effectiveness as a sound-absorbing material.

Comparison conclusion

Analyzing five distinct mycelium strains and their unique characteristics revealed that Pleurotus ostreatus, white Pleurotus ostreatus, and Pleurotus eryngii show the fastest and most stable growth. Following a comparative evaluation among these three strains, I selected Pleurotus eryngii to further investigate substrate variations.

Testing substrate variation for final recipe

Pleurotus eryngii has been selected as the optimal mycelium strain to test substrate effectiveness. For substrate selection, I am exploring two primary categories: paper products and natural materials. A control group without any additional substrate will also be included to evaluate whether these additions enhance the acoustic properties.

Acoustic measurement fo different substrate

With limited access to professional sound measuring equipment, I developed a DIY setup using PVC pipes, flange plates, seals, mycelium blocks, and two smartphones—one acting as the sound source and the other as the receiver.

Following a series of sound tests, the results indicated that
shredded cardboard had the lowest average sound level (Avg/Leq of 77.6 dB) and the lowest dose (90.3%). This suggests that it provides the best sound absorption quality among the materials tested.

Why do we need mycelium acoustic tile in workspace

However, Excessive noise levels in office environments can reduce concentration, increase errors, and cause stress among employees, ultimately impacting overall productivity.

Return to office: After the pandemic, many companies have shifted to hybrid work models, with employees gradually returning to office spaces.

How acoustic tile functions in workspace

Acoustic tile is commonly used to trap noise to provide a quiet workspace to enhance productivity. it works in multiple scenarios, including semi-open office, individual workspace, team working area and conference room. the most commonly used materials are felt, foam and fiberglass.

The effectiveness of acoustic tiles depends on several factors, including the material's thickness, density, and surface texture.

Each type of tile plays a specific role in optimizing the acoustic environment, contributing to a balanced and comfortable workspace.

Form development

The final design emerged from a process of combining patterns with refined silhouettes. Inspired by paper folding, I experimented with unique shapes to inspire innovative forms. After finding the ideal proportions, patterns were collaged onto outlines to assess their visual impact, and various combinations were tested in 3D modeling to achieve the final design.
