Aim to provide clean water during emergency for households to drink.

News Reference
In 2019 Trona, the town where the July 4th and 5th earthquakes were felt most keenly, it took 6 days for water service to be restored to residents. It was another 8 days before the water was safe to drink without boiling it first.





Specific Scenario
After emergency happened in Los Angeles county, there is no power or water from tap in a household.
They would get water from water heater, toilet tank and water pipe.
The product would be sent by the red cross to help citizens who are suffering from emergency to get access to drinkable water.



Benchmark Study
Originally, I thought this LifeStraw filter would be a sustainable and effective choice for citizens to get access to clean drinkable water. Based on the research, this product is not sustainable or effective to filter clean water.

-Transportation ways use less fossil fuel or cause less global warming

Goals & Strategies
After studying about the benchmark product using Life Cycle Assessment, Okala and Sustainable Minds, I learned a few opportunities that can be altered in the new design. Therefore, I listed three goals and strategies that can be used as standard to make better new design.

Final Concept-- Emergency Kit
After the research and study of benchmark, I decided to create a emergency kit that contains the functions of boiling and filtering. Minimizing the size of a boiler and filter meanwhile keep the main functions for the emergency kit would be the next challenge.










Shape & Capacity
In order to keep minimum hydrated which is 0.5 gallons per capita per day, 1.5 gallons for house of three, reducing the activities is one suggested method for loosing extra hydration. reducing times to boil water, and make it 4 times per day, gives the max amount of water need to boil every time.
The form is inspired by Erlenmeyer flask. Wider the bottom get contact with heat source, faster to boil water. Narrowed neck and lid prevents extra water evaporates.




Sustainable Minds Comparison
The impact per functional unit of this new design is lower than the benchmark, I think it is because of it’s longevity and durability. This product can be manufactured locally in Los Angeles county, so there is less transportation pollution. It carries more functions than the LifeStraw and be able to provide cleaner water for citizens to drink.
